Important Update! The City Council voted in a 3-2 vote to pass the ordinance, we did it!
Congratulations and thank you for your support for preserving Boulder City.
Our organization was founded in 1968 and has evolved over time. We pride ourselves on continuing to see to it that we honor the intentions and legacy of all the great work that previous members have contributed towards promoting the arts and culture in Boulder City.
We hold public meetings and organize several events each year to educate Boulder City residents on issues relating to historic preservation as well as promotion of the arts and culture in Boulder City with the help and support of volunteers and donations from the community.
Our fun events and meetings generally occur in historic buildings and locations around Boulder City's historic district whenever possible in an effort to see to it that our historic buildings continue to be used in ways that benefit the community.
Each year we sponsor and provide volunteers for Historic Preservation Day activities by organizing an annual "Tour of the Historic Water Filtration Plant" as well as the "Historic Art Contest".
We also organize and fund the annual "BC's Got Talent Show" as well as theatrical performances at the LADWP Building.
We have a great working relationship with the Boulder City Art Guild co- sponsoring The Historic Roof Tile Art Project.
Several of our board members volunteer their time on the Boulder City Historic Preservation Committee and several are members of the Boulder City Art Guild. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and have no paid employees, we fund our efforts through fundraising at our events and through donations.
In 2018 as a result of a generous donation by a BC resident, we facilitated the restoration of the roof of the Historic Water Filtration Plant which we have been advocating for and raising awareness about its importance to our city's history. Its complete restoration is now likely to occur through federal grant opportunities that are available to the city.
None of this would have happened without our continued advocacy for the restoration of this iconic historic structure which provided the very first drinking water for the Dam workers and the beautiful new town of Boulder City in 1931.
Please visit our Facebook page for Boulder City History and Arts Foundation and take a look to find out more about all the great things we do to promote history and the arts in our community.
We recommend that you follow us on Facebook at the link below to be better informed of our upcoming meetings as well as our fun and interesting events.
Below are photos from our Historic Windows Art Project which sought to beautify the black boarded up windows at the Water Filtration Plant. Also pictured is one of our community outreach meetings to discuss the lack of any protections for the historic district in 2016.
In 2019 we wrote our very own historic play called Gun Crazy. The play was based on the true story of Boulder City's first murder which occurred on Ash street. We had 17 performances of the play and people are still crying out for more, we intend to perform the play again and therefore we will not give away the plot:)
Detective Romano leads a group of would-be historic sleuths to interrogate the suspects.
Update there will be a tour as part of Historic Preservation Day 2023 on May 13th, 9:30am -12:30 pm
Each year in May the Historic Preservation Committee of Boulder City plans and organizes Preservation Day activities. As a sponsor of this great event each year we give tours of the Historic Water Filtration Plant which includes describing to the public how the plant operated, describing the process of how the water was pumped up to Boulder City from the Colorado River and how it was then treated to provide life-sustaining crystal clear water for the Dam workers and their families.
You can view a video of the tour and lecture by Ray White in our video section below.
Since the Old Hospital was demolished in 2015 we have focused heavily on advocating for the filtration plant's future, determined to see that it be fully restored and available for future generations to enjoy its rich and interesting history.
In 2018 our foundation received a very generous donation from a local resident who was inspired by our efforts to restore the plant which resulted in the entire roof being beautifully restored at no cost to the city. Since that time the property has been re-zoned as a government park and the city has applied for a substantial grant which would restore the whole exterior of the building including the original casement windows, masonry and the abatement of lead paint, etc.
As a condition of receiving this grant the plant would have to be designated as a Cultural Center and be available for the public to enjoy. It is not difficult to imagine many appropriate uses for the building, including educational programs for school children, etc.
Without our advocacy, this would not have been possible, in the not too distant past the building almost fell into the hands of developers which would have resulted in the loss of incredibly important historic artifacts and integrity.
We count on public support and residents voicing their support for historic preservation to our City council. We encourage you to voice support for the Proposed Historic Preservation Ordinance which incidentally is the official
"Model Historic Preservation Code" for the State of Nevada and similar to many historic town ordinances across the country. We anticipate that the city council will be discussing and voting on whether or not to implement this new code as soon as September 2022, so there's not much time left for you to contact our City Council members and voice your support. The new code would provide the much-needed basic protections to prevent more demolitions of our historic gems such as the Old Hospital which was carelessly demolished in 2015 by one of our town's own Planning Commission members which outraged the community at the time. Howeve, because there are no enforceable regulations to prevent such senseless demolitions of our historic resources the demolition was allowed to proceed.
This documentary film "FDR was HERE", filmed by one of our members sadly documents the demolition of the Historic Boulder City Hospital built to treat the injured and sick dam workers and was later to become the town's first hospital for residents after it was purchased through a fundraising effort by the community. The old hospital was needlessly demolished by one of the town's planning commissioners after a passionate campaign by citizens to save it from being destroyed and lost forever. Our historic buildings have zero protections and we urge you to contact the council members of Boulder City asking them to take action to protect our important historic assets. The film also features a moving interview with local historian Dennis McBride.
Our annual talent show takes place each year in May at the Boulder City Library and is a free show
for the community.. Due to circumstances beyond our control the 2023 BC's Got Talent Show must be postponed until fall. possibly in October.
The Historic Preservation Award 2022 was won by Susan McIntyre you can see her beautiful home and the presentation of the award in this YouTube video link.
